Two playback systems
Mozart offers two alternative playback methods with different advantages.
1. Classic MIDI playback
Classic MIDI playback uses your Windows MIDI device or synthesizer. This:
- is fast and lightweight;
- is compatible with any standard Windows MIDI setup;
- is ideal for quick proof‑listening for ensambles of up to 16 parts;
- allows you to export a standard MIDI (.mid) file.
2. Direct Synthesis playback
Direct Synthesis uses Mozart’s built‑in sound generation. This:
- provides richer, more detailed sound (depending on your installed soundfont);
- has no dependency on external MIDI devices;
- does not have the 16 MIDI-channel limitation allowing more flexible playback of music for larger ensembles.
You can switch between the two playback systems at any time.
Palback control
You can play back the whole piece just by pressing F2 or have more nuanced control with the playback toolbar:
Playing back selected bars
Mozart allows you to play back a whole piece or just selected bars. It lets you play all the parts on a score, just one, or any subset.
This is useful when checking a passage, rehearsing a difficult section, or listening to a short phrase repeatedly. This is helpful for:
- choral rehearsals
- instrumental parts
- checking voice‑leading
- isolating a line while composing
Playback and score navigation
During playback, Mozart follows the current position in the score with a moving cursor, making it easy to follow the music visually. You can stop, pause, or restart playback at any time.
