Release notes for MOZART 4 Version 4.0.1 May 1999 Some teething troubles: - Time signature changes at the start of a new line were being drawn correctly at the end of the previous line, but not always at the start of the new line. This is now fixed. - Entering multiple bars rest immediately after a time or key change sometimes refused to include the first bar within the set. Thanks to Mark Heron for demonstrating this in the fiendishly difficult soprano sax part of his arrangement of the Prologue of "West Side Story" - I have now fixed it in MOZART and all that remains to do is persuade Mark to include a few notes lower than top F#. (MOZART handles it perfectly but the rest of us have to work harder.) - Beaming notes was rationalised in MOZART 4.0.0 to allow beaming across barlines. But Robert Charlesworth has pointed out that if you try to beam them across ends of lines then the result is a mess. This is now fixed. Thanks Robert. - Thanks also to Robert for identifying exactly what juxtaposition of final bar, caret, and end- of-tune marker was leading to a bug on pasting. This is now fixed too. - MOZART 4 made a subtle change in the text entry box: "Enter" now leaves the box and Ctrl+Enter is needed to put in a new line. This was a response to popular request to facilitate the input of lyrics, which is now quicker. However not everyone is familiar with the Ctrl+Enter command (which is a Windows standard option but perhaps not so commonly used). There is now a reminder on the text box itself. - Using the SpaceInsert command with the caret on the end-of-tune marker crashed; it now works properly (and in this case does what right arrow did properly all along). Thanks to both Mark Venn and Bart Johnson for pointing this one out very diplomatically. - MOZART playback was crashing if a 3rd time bar was encountered. Thanks to Mario Dimayuga for pointing this out. It is now fixed. - Combining strands on to a single stave was falling over with certain peculiar combinations of items and spacings in the strands. Thanks to Sophie Quigley for falling over just the right combination of items and giving me enough information to fix this quickly. ================================================================ Version 4.0.2 June 1999 - Adding harmonies with the spacebar now adds a sharpened or flattened note according to the accidental showing on the current note toolbar. Erratic behaviour when adding a harmony with the piano keyboard tool is fixed. Thanks to various people for pointing this one out. - If you added a large enough number of new staves to a score that it became so deep that a single score line wouldn't fit on the printer page, then the view was lost. This is now fixed and MOZART asks if it should user a smaller music font size. Thanks to Paul Lewin for pointing this one out. - If you tried to paste where it is not possible, MOZART would warn you, but thereafter lose the caret highlight. Thanks to Sarah Marr for pointing this one out; it is now fixed. - Thanks also to Sarah for pointing out one or two infelicites in dialogues - especially the tempo selector, which now highlights the tempo frequency when you enter it. - Very occasionally MOZART would crash if you try a clef change in some files. Thanks to Jesuo de las Heras for sending an example of this, which allowed us to fix it. - The emergency fix-up command Ctrl+F5 has also been improved. ================================================================ Version 4.0.3 October 1999 - Tenuto marks under notes on lines with tails pointing up at the next-to-smallest magnification were not being drawn distinctly from the stave line below the note. This is now fixed. Thanks to Andrew Good for pointing this out. - If you added a time signature change to the end of your piece and then tried to paste material immediately after it, then it turns out that the results were rather unpleasant. Thanks (kiitos!) to Ville Sinkko in Finland for finding this one, and for sending a rather exciting composition with lots of time changes in 7/16, 9/16, 11/16, 13/16, 15/16... which illustrated the problem and allowed me to pinpoint it. It is now fixed. - Thanks to Darrel Hoffman for pointing out that MOZART 4.0.2 was getting confused about the horizontal offset of its stave labels when the page format or printer font were changed, and sending an example to illustrate it. This is now fixed. - The file which Darrel sent was a large one - a full concerto - and it was clear that some operations were taking rather a long time. In particular the ScoreLayout command needs to do a lot of reformatting if you move, insert, or delete strands or staves and the time spent is fairly unavoidable. But if you just change braces and brackets and stave names, most of the reformatting can be bypassed and it can happen a lot quicker. This is now implemented. ================================================================ Version 4.0.4 December 1999 - Thanks to Sue Franklin, my friend and colleague from The Sax Section and The North Cheshire Concert Band, for pointing out that merging beamed notes, when there are rests within the beamed group, was not always a happy experience. This is what friends are for, and it is now fixed. - A completely different problem was that the MergeMultiplet command was sometimes applying itself with too much zeal and merging a nearby previous multiplet as well as the one it was suppsed to act on. Thanks to Darrel Hoffman for pointing this one out - it is now also fixed. - Robert Charlesworth has noticed that you can't delete a bar immediately after the end of a second time (last time) bar, and sees no reason why this should not be allowed. I can't find a reason either, and so with a small tweak of the code it is now possible. Thanks for pointing this one out Robert. - Inserting bars has been causing problems if you chose the "fill with rests" option (as opposed to hidden rests). Thanks to Mark Venn for pointing this one out. It is now fixed. ================================================================ Version 4.0.5 February 2000 - Juhana Lehtiniemi has noticed that if you select a block starting from a second or later bar within a first time bar bracket and extending beyond the end of the first time bar bracket, then the playback hangs. Thanks to Juhana for a very cogent analysis of this problem - it is now fixed. (MOZART will automtically extend the block back to the beginning of the first time bar to avoid what are otherwise very difficult choices.) - Thanks also to Bengt Johnsson for pointing out that tied notes do not sound as tied if the tie goes across a key or clef change. This is now fixed as is the drawing which was also wrong (as was kindly pointed out by Robert Charlesworth). - Thanks to a few people for pointing out that trying to make a single bar longer than a line of the stave sometimes leads to trouble, but thanks especially to James Bartee for his clear explanation of how to reproduce this problem, enabling it to be fixed in this version. ================================================================ Version 4.0.6 April 2000 -Simon White has pointed out that it is not possible to create a whole bar rest immediately following a key or time change. Thanks, Simon, it is now fixed. -A pause (fermata) on a whole bar rest was being drawn twice - once in the right place and once in the wrong place. Thanks to Michael Bednarek for pointing this out. It is now fixed. ================================================================ Version 4.0.7 August 2000 -Sometimes tied chords were not always acquiring the optimum default tie style when undergoing automatic reformatting. This is now fixed. Thanks to Robert Charlesworth for pointing me in the direction of this one. -Thanks to Les Lawrence for highlighting a problem when there's an "extra" barline near the right of the stave. This is now fixed.
