ENTERING MUSIC

• MOZART is designed for rapid music entry
  - through the computer keyboard (using arrow keys and space bar to enter a note),
  - through a piano keyboard toolbar (click on a key),
  - or through a connected MIDI keyboard (or other MIDI instrument);
• notes in parallel parts align automatically;
• barlines appear automatically (as dictated by the chosen time signature);
• quavers  (1/8th notes) and shorter are beamed automatically by default;
• notes (left or right of stem), accidentals, and dots align automatically on chords;
• lyric text under the notes aligns automatically as it is entered;
• hyphens and underscores in lyric lines align and extend automatically;
• rests may be drawn at different pitches above and below stave centre;
• notes may be offset horizontally from their logical position;
• notes are optionally echoed as they are entered;
• MOZART can also import MIDI, NIFF, and MusicXML files
  (the latter two allowing it to work in conjunction with scanning software).

SUPPORTED SYMBOLS INCLUDE:

• notes and rests;
• accidentals;
• chords (more than one note head on a stem) allowing double stopping and simple divisi as well as chord names (eg G7) for piano, guitar etc;
• chord shape diagrams for guitar
• note beams in any pattern (also across bar lines)
• whole bar rests;
• multiple bars rest;
• accents: ^ and > as well as tenuto, and staccato;
• ties and phrase marks;
• a variety of bar line styles;
• bar numbering;
• clefs: treble, bass, alto, tenor and percussion;
• optional '8' above/below a clef to indicate an octave transposition;
• key signatures from 7 sharps to seven flats;
• time signatures (a very large range);
• common time and alla breve symbols as options for 4/4 and 2/2;
• triplets and other multiplets (tuplets);
• a choice of round or square brackets with a multiplet digit, or none;
• cross and diamond note heads as well as standard ones;
• cue notes;
• grace notes including acciaccatura, appoggiatura, and beamed grace notes;
• trill, turn, inverted turn, mordent, inverted mordent;
• spills, falls, scoops, bends, doits, and other jazz articulations;
• tremolo
• reiteration strokes through a stem; 
• pause (fermata);
• tempo markings;
• dynamics;
• hairpins;
• repeat sections with 1st 2nd, 3rd...time bar if required;
• the repeat-a-bar symbol;
• the repeat two bars symbol;
• DC, DS, Segno (sign), Coda, and Fine;
• tablature for guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo, and other plucked string instruments;
• bowing marks for strings;
• break (//) symbol;
• 8va, 8vb
• pedal marks for piano;
• arpeggiation of chords;
• chord symbols (G7 C#9 etc) which transpose automatically with the music, and play back if desired;
• rehearsal marks (which automatically stay in sequence);

• any other symbol which can be entered from any TrueType font.

EDITING MUSIC

• notes are  rapidly positioned or repitched  with the cursor keys;
• MOZART can transpose a piece (or part of one) instantly;
• As well as just entering notes and rests MOZART has commands to:
  - repitch notes
  - change octaves
  - convert between notes and tests
  - alter notes chromatically
  - replace a note enharmonically  (eg to turn D# into Eb and vice versa)

• there are keyboard shortcuts for most common commands;
• cut, copy, paste commands are available;
• bars may be inserted in any time signature
• bars may be deleted;
• beats may be inserted and deleted, shifting subsequent music right or left relative to the barlines;
• there are multiple levels of undo and redo;
• any item may be defined as "hidden" (not printed);
• screen colours are used to indicate non-printing control items and which part is current;
• you can export an image of the music from the current music window (without the surrounding frame);
• you can export a high resolution image of a whole page of the music (to paste into your favourite image editor and/or into a text document);
• Chord symbol styles are configurable - eg  C° vs. Cdim,  and E+ vs. Eaug &c;
• German notation (H for B, B for Bb) is available as an option.
  

INSTRUMENTATION

• MOZART has a wide selection of available instruments;
• there is full support for transposing instruments;
• you can add more instruments to MOZART's data base (if you find any which are missing!);
• scores may be viewed and printed at concert pitch (with all instruments shown at the pitch at which they sound) or at "written pitch" with all instruments' parts shown as the instrumentalist sees them;

SCORE FORMAT

• new scores can be created rapidly according to pre-defined templates;
• a number of rhythmically independent strands (parts) may be added on the same stave, allowing more complex divisi and easy construction of music for piano, classical guitar, etc;
• pieces may have up to 64 parts and staves on the score;
• staves may be grouped into sub-systems with braces {, brackets [, and bar lines |;
• staves may be labelled in the left hand margin;
• parts and staves may be added to/removed from existing scores;
• parts and staves may be repositioned on the score;
• stave spacing within a system may be uniform or customised;
• individual staves may be hidden on systems where they contain no music.
• to speed up music entry, the default tail direction can be set separately for each part as up, down, or towards the stave centre;
• percussion of indefinite pitch may be shown on a variety of different stave types;
• new percussion parts may be constructed rapidly from pre-saved percussion sets;
• bars may be numbered manually, at automatic intervals, or at the start of each line;
• bar numbers may start at any desired value;
• rehearsal marks may start at any desired value;
• individual parts may be separated from the score using a template for the individual part - allowing rapid production of a whole set of parts from the score to a uniform standard;
• you can save a new score template from any score;

PAGE FORMAT AND PRINTING

• MOZART comes with its own TrueType musical symbols font for professional quality output;
• there is Print Preview - just like on any modern word processor;
• right-justification to end of line is automatic: switch this on and the music automatically adjusts itself so that the right hand bar line on each line aligns with the right hand side of the stave;
• two kinds of hard line break are available;
• pieces have editable titles, headers, and footers;
• your own copyright string can be defined for any piece and displayed within headers and footers and in an exported MIDI file;

PLAY-BACK, PLAY-IN, and MIDI

• play back through your sound card synthesiser or external MIDI synth) at the press of a button;
• the whole range of instrumental voices (including percussion) is available on systems supporting "General MIDI";
• play-back can be straight or adopt one of a variety of jazz "swing" styles;
• play-back optionally shows progress with a moving cursor on the music;
• you can play back from the start of the music, from the current insertion point, from the start of a selected block;
• overall play-back volume level on each MIDI channel is configurable;
• parts or sections of parts can be marked as silent on play-back;
• volumes associated with dynamics symbols are fully configurable;
• stereo output pan control on each MIDI channel.
• export MIDI files either "straight" or with "swing";
• swing pieces may have sections played straight
• MIDI files  (.mid .rmi and .kar) can also be imported.   Import a MIDI file, and start your own arrangement from there!
• you can enter music connected MIDI keyboard (or other MIDI instrument), either note by note (or chord by chord) or by playing in in real time;
  

GENERAL

• MOZART supports very flexible zooming in the editing window,
• on starting the program, MOZART restores various settings (eg frame window position and size) which you were using last time;
• there are pop-up menus on right clicking;
• screen colours are configurable;
• on MAPI-compliant systems you can send the open music document via e-mail;
• MOZART files may be opened, played, or printed by left or right clicking on a document icon;
• you can drag and drop MOZART files from the Windows explorer to the printer;
• the mouse wheel is supported for fine scrolling (use Ctrl to scroll horizontally).
• floating/docking tool bars  include:
  - access to standard new, open, save, cut, copy, paste commands
  - a  toolbar to select note/rest durations
  - an alternative toolbar and keyboard shortcuts 0-7 for note durations
  - dynamics
  - hairpins
  - note head styles
• toolbar buttons include tool tips; 
• keyboard shortcuts are configurable to users' preferences;
• automatic timed back-ups are made (if desired) to protect against losing data in a system crash;
• MOZART runs on all modern flavours of Windows: 98, ME, 2000, XP

• MOZART comes with a step-by step, lesson-by-lesson tutorial manual;
• both forms of documentation are available in PDF format;

• the MOZART web site provides a FAQ page;
• there is an opt-in MOZART  discussion forum (mailing list) where you can talk to other users;
